What are the chemicals used in for the developer?
Yes, you can make it at home. However, unless you are trying to do something out of the ordinary, the packaged mixtures usually work best.

Here is the recipe for Kodak's D-76 developer.

Water 52 deg C.. 750cc

Elon............ 2 grams

Sodium Sulfite . 100 grams

Elon............ 2 grams

Hydroquinone ... 5 grams

Borax........... 2 grams

Cold Water to make 1 liter

There's one for D-19 here:

If you Google: Hydroquinone recipe developer

you will find links to others.
Reply:I hope you get better answers than mine! As I understand it the developer 'hardens' the emulsion and makes it non-reactive to the fixing solution. The fixer then dissolves as much emulsion as was not 'hardened'.

I know it is possible to prepare and use solutions at home for black and white film processing. Colour processing demands very accurate temperature control.
