Your best bet is taking a computing degree course. Try and find one that teaches C/C++ or C#, 3d modeling (3d studio max) and maths/physics for 2d/3d programming.
After this, you can get a job and eventually hope to try and get into the games industry, or you can continue your studies with a Masters degree.
There are games specific courses out there but I wouldn't recommend going for one of them at degree level. Most people seem to think it's a bad idea.
I would stress that it is not easy to get into the games industry by any means, and believe me you are not alone in wanting to. If you really enjoy programming games, try to consider it a hobby which can enhance your general skills as a programmer/modeler etc. - which are very employable.
If you really are good, there are also very well recognised games design competitions you can enter. Take any and every opportunity you can.
Good luck.
How difficult is it to be a games developer how long will it take to get qualified and what do I study?
it depends on what you want to do. a 2d game would require either flash or java. a 3d game, like the next halo, is more complicated requiring knoledge of many languages. you could start with genesis 3d. its a simple program. then you would need to know how to do models, to make realistic characters, unless your characters are Darth Box and the Death Cube.
this would take you a while with 3d, so be prepared
Reply:There's no "qualified". You learn programming, then you learn a language like C++. Then you get a job writing code in C++. After a few years you're no longer an entry-level programmer and you can get a job at a decent rate of pay. That's the point at which you start looking for a job in the game industry.
How long it takes you to learn programming and to become good with C++ depends on you - some people can do it in 6 months, some can't do it at all.
Or you can do what most people do - muddle along on your own, hoping for some magical stroke of luck. It happens - Bill Gates dropped out of college. Tens of thousands of other college dropouts are flipping burgers.
Reply:Okay, no need to get qualified.
Here is how I done it...
Start learning Microsoft Visual Basic (using Visual basic Studio). In this language you are able to learn the basics of programming, and also do a bit of 2d game programming, like GTA or something.
Then you have a choice, C,C++,C#. Now if you want to stay near VB then try c# which you can now use XNA. If you want something powerful then use C or C++ which then you can use an API either OpenGL or DirectX which will assist you in making basic or amazing graphics. Literally with directx there is no limits.
So here is my recommendation:
1. Learn VB with internet resources.
2. Program a couple of games with vb (send to me;))
3. Learn C programming with a book.
4. Learn Directx with a book.
5. Make rediculously amazing games*
*based on your skill and knowledge ;)
Also, repition is the key to learning. Try examples over and over then try and write the program/game without help.
You dont need qualifications to become a games developer. Just need to be good at it.
