I am planning to study web development basically ASP.Net/
javascript/photoshop and some flash. I am expecting to study for 6 months. After that can I expect to get a job in a company? Is the field saturated? Will my age be an issue. I know a little html already.
Web developer at 47 possible or not?
Anything is possible. I'm 47 and work primarily with ASP.NET. But I have a degree in computer information systems.
What kind of life experience you have may help. For example, if you were a plumber and you are going to develop a website for a plumbing supply house, that may be a benefit. But no one else would likely be seeking a plumber with 6 months of programming classes.
I'd say you need to delete experience from the equation by working with newer, cutting edge technologies that No One has much experience with. Take a look at Silverlight, which is Microsofts answer to flash and is only out in BETA until this fall. AJAX (asyncronous javascript and XML) is also drawing a lot of interest.
good luck
Reply:Yeah the job market for web design is pretty saturated and is frankly not very well paid. There's opportunities there but you need to be able to prove you're the best out of the 100 or so other people that are applying for the same job.
Reply:I would definately be sure to keep a regular income until I could get web work on a steady basis. With that little experience I seriously doubt you will be able to find a job on the outside developing. A lot of the larger companies will not even consider your app if you are not a college grad or have several years exp in design and development. Most of the ones I have seen want you to be highly skilled multiple programming languages as well as CSS, (x)HTML, JavaScipt. I am only a few years younger then you and believe the larger companies also have a cutoff age of around 45 even if they will not admit it. I have been trying since December of last year and have more qualifications then you mentioned. I came to the conclusion the only way to survive for me is to start my own business up and sell websites that way.
Reply:I changed jobs this year from being mainly a Java based software engineer to being totally a user interface engineer (JavaScript, AJAX, CSS, HTML, JSP). The dough is great (nearly six figures after expected bonus). I'm 50.
There are many people in the field - not so many good ones - few great ones. At 47, you should have better work habits and much more depth and breadth of business skills than the kiddies. Those a real pluses. However, I would expect you to need more than "a little HTML" and "6 months" of study. I've been doing these things for almost a decade.
